As we're nearing the end of this year, talk about goal-setting and business planning is everywhere. New Year's resolutions are always a popular topic around this time, and for good reason. Setting business goals is a great way to get your year off to a productive start.
“The trouble with not having a goal is that you can spend your life running up and down the field and never score.” —Bill Copeland
This quote by Bill Copeland is the perfect summary of the entrepreneurial mindset of being proactive about goal-setting. It is ultimately to help us score - whatever we are dreaming about.
What are YOU dreaming about for your business this coming year?
Do you know what you want to achieve?
Do you know the steps you can take to start building your vision?
If you're not setting goals yet, you're definitely missing out on a powerful way to achieve success. And you're not alone. Many people don't do goal-setting because they just don't know how to set effective goals.
In this post, we'll touch on the importance of goal setting for founders, and outline a few tips to help you create meaningful goals for your business.
The importance of goal setting for founders
When you're starting a business, it's important to have a clear vision and that you intentionally set goals for yourself and your company.
Setting goals is important for several reasons.
- First, it provides a sense of direction and focus. Having goals gives you something to aim for, and it's easier to make progress when you know where you're headed. It can help you identify what action steps you can take and what your potential challenges will be.
- Second, goals can help you measure your progress and track your success. It's motivating to be able to look back on what you've accomplished and see how far you've come.
- Finally, goals can help you stay motivated during challenging times. When things get tough, it's helpful to remember why you're working so hard in the first place and what you're working towards.
Tips to help you create meaningful business goals
The goals you set as a new founder can vary, depending on what stage your startup is in and what goals make sense for the goals you already have.
A few tips to keep in mind:
- It's important to build goals around what is truly meaningful to you. Understanding why you want to achieve something, or what the impact is that you're hoping to make, can help fuel your motivation to take the necessary action steps to achieve it
- Set goals that are achievable and realistic, but that also stretches you. You don't need to know in advance exactly how you're going to achieve every step towards your goal
- Use an established goal-setting method to help organize your ideas and structure your goals. It's proven to increase your chances of success
- Set goals that move you closer towards your desired outcomes but also leave room for iteration if need be
- Create goals for every part of your life - so don’t forget about personal goals (ex. starting a family), and how the different parts all work together in your life
